Mountains, geological features and encounters
The Rothaarsteig – the "path of the senses" – takes you
a total of 154 km in length and 3,931 metres in altitude from Brilon through the Sauerland, Wittgensteiner Mountains and Siegerland to Dillenburg at the foot of the Westerwald Forest.
The classic Rothaarsteig hike takes you – depending on your fitness level and experience – in six to 12 stages - through woods and forests, over peaks and plateaus, past inviting adventure stations and to magnificent views. Of course, you always have the freedom to hike the Rothaarsteig at your own pace and to your own taste. And who knows, you might even meet one of the Rothaarsteig rangers, recognizable by the typical Ranger hat and the Rothaarsteig logo.

The Briloner Kammweg, the crest trail
diverse, imaginative and fantastic
If you want to meet the Brilon forest fairy in person, you have to get up early and explore the Brilon crest trail at dawn. Admittedly, a bit of imagination and good luck are also needed to discover the beautiful guardian of the forest on the 49 km long hiking trail. But even if she doesn't show herself to you, a fantastic sight awaits you here: From the half-timbered houses on Brilon's market square, you can head out into the woods for magical light shows, mystical worlds of color and real natural wonders ...
The Geological Sprung
A natural wonder and science for everybody
It all began about 419.2 million years ago ... In the geological age of Devon, geological peculiarities and landscape typologies developed over a period of about 57 million years, which can still be seen today in the Sauerland. Two of them are the limestone peaks of the Brilon plateau and the deposits of the Bilstein. The special feature: in Brilon they meet in a very small space. The "Geological Sprung" is an 8.5 km long circular trail dedicated to these and other geological evidence. With viewing tubes, explanations and a viewing platform on the Bilsteinhalde slope, visitors can experience the history and geology of the region.
The Gewerkenweg, or mining trail
unterground adventures and lived history
For a long time and until the early 20th century, mining in the Sauerland was one of the economic foundations of the region. Even today, the tunnels, huts and traces of mining bear witness to the hard work of the Brilon miners. Start the 11 or 21 km long hike with a visit to the museum in Brilon and dive from there into history and your underground voyage of discovery.
